Destruction of Ecosystems and Dangerous Expansion

Post by 66chandona »

Socialism democratic socialism—has experienced a renaissance in the United States, largely thanks to Bernie Sanders, who is not strictly a socialist, but a New Deal Democrat. Calling himself a socialist probably didn't help Sanders win votes. In 2019, when the public was asked if they would vote for various types of people for president, "socialist" came last with 47% - the same percentage as in 2015 - after "Muslim", "Over 70 years old" and "atheist.

But socialism gave people, and especially young people, a name for their rage against the status quo and helped make the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), an organization special data joined. does not belong, will increase its membership to about 90,000. I belong to the DSA and sometimes say that I am a socialist, while wondering what exactly I mean. In America, it seems to mean, at the very least, a great welfare state with healthcare for all, free public college, racial and gender equality, environmental protections, strong unions, personal liberties, and political democracy. It is what Robert Heilbroner called "real but slightly imaginary Sweden" in the pages of Dissent magazine in 1991. I am in favor of all those things, starting with a powerful welfare state.

I would support very high levels of taxes, including on myself, so that everyone could enjoy a decent and dignified life with excellent education, healthcare, housing, without poverty and with much less inequality. But that is not socialism. Sweden, as Heilbroner pointed out, is a capitalist country. It has corporations that wield power over the economy and, despite its label as a pacifist country and its low population density, it exported more than $300 million worth of weapons last year. You have private companies that are striving for profit. And she is no stranger to consumerism. Socialism used to mean much more than a generous welfare state.
